In the Jewish community, when a person becomes Bat Mitzvah, they are said to become an adult. While I won't be a legal adult, I can still let go of the childlike focus on me and become a contributing member of the community.
I chose to do this by using my passion for baking as a way to raise money for my synagogue and a local organization, Color Me Human, that supports BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Culture) and people in the LGBTQ+ community (both causes that are important to me).
My bake sale was a big success! Even though it's over, you can still donate directly with a note saying that it's for "Olivia's Bat Mitzvah."
Please support Color Me Human and Congregation B'nai Harim!
The Jewish teaching of Tikkun Olam says that each person has a part in repairing the world. It speaks to our responsibility as humans to fix the damage we’ve done. I connect with this teaching as I believe I have a duty to right mine and my ancestors’ wrongs. That’s why I chose to donate part of my proceeds to an organization supporting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folx and also to use vegan ingredients that do not bring suffering animals.
Led by a multi-racial, multi-cultural team Color Me Human celebrates and supports the under-resourced communities in California’s second whitest county. They Celebrate, Elevate, Educate, and Advocate to create a safe, equitable world for Black, Indigenous, People of Culture and LGBTQ+ folx.
